HELP PROTECT INDEPENDENT REDISTRICTING » [[link removed]]

John -- Since the unprecedented gerrymandering of 2011, citizens across the country have taken power back from politicians with the establishment of bipartisan or independent redistricting commissions. Sadly, we’re now seeing active efforts by Republicans to sabotage these reforms:

✥The Virginia Redistricting Commission is currently considering a congressional map that was meant to be a “compromise” between Democrats and Republicans -- yet the map was submitted by Tom Davis, the former chair of the National Republican Congressional Committee!

✥Despite Michigan voters’ overwhelming support for establishing the state's independent redistricting commission, the National Republican Redistricting Trust sued to block its creation in 2019! Luckily the suit failed.

✥Missouri voters also made history with the creation of a bipartisan redistricting commission in 2018 -- only to see a Republican legislator sponsor a ballot initiative that significantly weakened the commission with its passage in 2020, which experts attributed to confusion about what the measure would do.

GOP lawmakers and operatives are working to undermine these three redistricting reforms because if the map-drawing process is fair -- many of them would have to answer to a representative sample of voters and not just the voices of the voters they choose.
