John,
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: our democracy is on the line.
That’s why we need the Senate to act now and pass two pieces of critical legislation that will help fix our broken political system and build a democracy that works for all Americans.
But Senate Republicans just blocked one of these bills — the Freedom to Vote Act (S. 2747) — before it was even brought to the floor for debate. Not even a vote! Even though the bill is already a bipartisan compromise, led by Sen. Joe Manchin, who drafted it after talking with his colleagues on both sides of the aisle.
According to reports, the other bill — the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (S. 4) — could be voted on in the Senate as soon as next week. We’ve got to turn up the heat.
Can you write to your senators today? Tell them that they must do whatever it takes to pass both of these crucial bills and strengthen our democracy.
Tell your senators: Support the Freedom to Vote Act and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act!
There’s no reason these bills should be obstructed by any party. In fact, the Voting Rights Act has been reauthorized in the Senate on five separate occasions by overwhelming majorities of Republicans and Democrats since its original passage in 1965. And protecting our elections, ensuring every American’s freedom to vote, and ending partisan gerrymandering — all of which the Freedom to Vote Act would do — aren’t partisan reforms. Members of Congress should stop acting like they are.
We need the Senate to step up for our democracy and pass these two important bills.
Write to your senators today and tell them to strengthen our democracy.
Onward,
