We know this to be true: Our environmental and conservation work is inextricably tied to the fight for a government that is representative and responsive to the people. That’s why we’ve made advocating for voting rights and voting access a central part of our mission. Leading up to the pivotal 2020 election, we worked in coalition with allies fighting for a more inclusive and fair democracy. We met directly with decisionmakers to urge them to maximize accessibility to voting, prioritizing Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, low-income voters, voters with disabilities, young voters, and housing-insecure voters who have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic. And we worked diligently to ensure voting options were expanded and not reduced during the pandemic for those needing in-person services, like same-day voter registration, translation services, and sufficient and accessible ballot drop boxes. But one of our proudest accomplishments was seeing AB 860 pass through the California legislature ahead of the November 2020 election. This bill required every county in California to send voters a vote-by-mail ballot and provide online tracking. This victory was directly responsible for the historic voter turnout we saw in that election. Due to the success of that policy and the groundwork laid out by our organizing and advocacy, vote-by-mail is now permanent for all elections moving forward, as the governor recently signed it into law! But here’s where we have more to do: Despite the historically high turnout in 2020, data shows that less than a third of voters know about the increased voting options. That means we must work to increase education and awareness on how to accurately and conveniently vote in future elections. So please join us by making a gift right now to continue this critical work towards climate justice by helping us expand and protect voting rights and voting access → |
