I want to tell you why your support to our campaign – even $3 – matters, especially right now:

— Last election, my opponent, aided by allies of President Trump, raised over $4 million to defeat me.

– We are expecting another expensive race in the coming months, as Trump once again escalates his attacks.

– And we may have an even more challenging race in a brand new district as a result of reapportionment.

Let me take a step back to tell you why I’m reaching out with this ask of you, and why your support is so imperative. In 2008, California voters passed Prop. 11, which created an independent citizen’s redistricting commission to draw the lines for all congressional districts.

In 2011, it drew new maps for every single district in California. That’s the right policy and something that should be replicated in every single state (and something we’re pushing for).

But it caused some members – particularly in California – to have to run against each other. Others to run in districts composed of voters who didn’t know them. And others to have to spend millions to protect against Republicans determined to make the most of the once-in-a-decade opportunity to beat Democrats.

Already, the Commission is discussing maps that would significantly change almost every single district in California, including mine. My district could be combined with another, split into many pieces, or become a more conservative seat and pit me against another Trump Republican. We just don’t know. But we do know it could be extremely difficult.

We don’t have the luxury to wait until new maps are released in January. We need to prepare right now.

Listen, last election cycle, I faced a far-right Trump opponent who raised over $4 million to defeat me. He went on TV and radio with ads attacking my character. He sent vicious attack mailers with false smears. And he spread lies and conspiracy theories about me across the district. Those took a real toll.

And this cycle, I’ll likely have to face numerous opponents only four months after we get the new maps. It could be a perfect storm, and we don’t have the luxury to wait and hope for the best.
