As promised, Katie’s answering your questions! We appreciate everyone who took the time to write to Katie. While we couldn’t get to all of the questions, check out her responses below to learn about elder care, the recent oil spill in California, and even an idea for a Halloween costume.

Are there ways to prevent any further oil spills just like the one at Huntington Beach? —Sarah from California YES! And for our economy and our planet, we need to do all we can to keep oil spills like this from happening. While the exact cause of the spill is still under investigation, the reality is that where there are oil pipelines and platforms, there are oil spills. The solution lies in moving away from our dependence on oil. That’s not as crazy an idea as it may sound—oil and gas companies are profitable because of government subsidies. But the subcommittee I lead recently produced a report, which found these subsidies to be outdated and a waste of taxpayer money. Getting rid of these subsidies is the first step to getting rid of the problem. |

Is CA really losing a seat in Congress based on the Census? CA is the most populous state in the country and I just don't believe this! —Kathy from California It’s true! While we are the most populous state, our growth has been slower compared to other states. So while states like Oregon, Texas, and Florida are gaining a seat, states like California and New York will be losing one. |

What is being done to help caregivers for elderly? This burden falls on women in most families and can last for decades. —Jennifer from California Great question. To address this, the Build Back Better Act would create a national comprehensive paid family and medical leave program. Under the program, workers would still receive a portion of their normal paycheck while they are on leave. This will enable people to take the time they need to bond with their new baby, recover from their own serious illness, or care for an older family member. Of course, like you said, many older Americans need care for longer than the few weeks covered by family leave. That’s why the Build Back Better Act would also expand access to long-term care services under Medicaid. It would also boost the pay of care workers, which will help bring more workers into the care industry, a real benefit for older Americans and the people who care for them. |
