Friend,
Where in the U.S. can a person earning minimum wage and working full-time actually afford to rent a place? Zero counties in the U.S., it turns out, if you’re looking for two-bedroom apartments—and almost nowhere if you’re looking for a one-bedroom.1
As rental and home prices increase, communities across the country are suffering. Decades of government disinvestment and discriminatory policies have especially harmed Black people and other people of color, who now face a growing racial wealth gap.
We have a chance to turn this around, securing much-needed affordable housing investments in the Build Back Better legislation. However, as Congressional leaders are negotiating in hopes of reaching a final deal this week, some critical programs may be cut.
Safe shelter is a basic human need. Will you donate today to fight for crucial investments in housing in the Build Back Better Act?
One program I’m fighting to keep is $7.5 billion that I secured in the Build Back Better legislation to fund neighborhood revitalization activities, such as: homeowner rehabilitation assistance for existing residents experiencing economic distress, weatherization, improved housing accessibility for seniors and people with disabilities, housing counseling, refinancing, property tax relief, and so much more.
This funding would turn homeownership from a possibility to a reality for so many who have been left out, and would ensure that many others have the ability to maintain and stay in their homes in good condition.
Coming from a bill I co-introduced, the Restoring Communities Left Behind Act, this new grant program would also create opportunities for affordable rental housing, by supporting local nonprofits and community land trusts to redevelop vacant, abandoned, or distressed properties.
In the wake of devastating flooding, my team and I have been knocking on doors to hear firsthand from our district’s residents about what they need and what matters most to them. What keeps coming up are needs for affordable housing and neighborhood revitalization. These are top priorities for my district, the third poorest congressional district in the country.
Struggling communities like mine exist across the country, and deserve support from our federal government. But our efforts for housing justice are under threat.
Will you rush a donation today to fight for our investments in communities who’ve been left behind?
Thank you. Everyone deserves to thrive and to flourish in safe homes and communities. We’re dreaming of and building that world together.
In solidarity and gratitude,
Rashida
