PFAS is hurting children throughout the country, but we have a window to solve this toxic chemicals crisis.

Here's what we know: Last year, the government's own scientists discovered that a group of chemicals known as perfluoroalkyls (or PFAS for short) are much more dangerous than previously thought. These chemicals are especially dangerous to pregnant women and children and they have been linked to cancer, thyroid disease, and many other serious health problems.

And these chemicals have been found in drinking water in communities across the country. According to a recent CNBC report, over a hundred million people could be drinking PFAS-contaminated water, but Trump and EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler are doing almost nothing to clean up these chemicals or stop manufacturers from using them.

Luckily, Congress is ready and willing to act. Just last week, the House passed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which included strong amendments that urged the military and EPA to act to solve the PFAS crisis. This is a great step towards protecting our water. As the House and the Senate negotiate what the final NDAA bill will look like, it's up to us to make sure they include a strong package of actions on PFAS. From the clothing we wear to fire-fighting foam used in our communities, PFAS chemicals are used all around us. In fact, more than 95% of the U.S. population has PFAS in their bodies. To make matters worse, PFAS chemicals don't break down naturally in the environment ? which means that the only way we can really protect our communities from these toxic chemicals is to quickly stop using them and clean up the existing pollution.

The scope of this contamination is still being uncovered, but we know it's big and that our military communities are among some of the hardest hit. The Department of Defense is one of the largest sources of PFAS chemicals, with more than 100 military bases and surrounding communities currently facing serious PFAS crises. Our military service members, their families, and communities deserve better and we speak out alongside them to solve this crisis ? and the NDAA is one critical step we can take forward.

Every day that we delay action means that more families could be exposed to these pollutants and face life-threatening health risks. It's critical that our members of Congress hear from their constituents and understand just how urgent the need to act is.
