Updates from the Young Center

October 2021
In March 2020, the administration announced that it was using a public health law, Title 42, to prevent asylum-seekers from entering the United States. More than a year later, the border remains closed to almost all asylum-seekers under this policy. "I know immigration is often a polarizing topic, but I view the challenges facing immigrant children, specifically those facing unaccompanied children, as a humanitarian issue that transcends politics."

At the Young Center, we are fortunate to have committed supporters who have made our work possible for years. Anthony Sernus is one of our most dedicated friends, championing our work as a volunteer Child Advocate and through salsa classes that raise funds for the Young Center. To date, Anthony has raised $1,400 to support undocumented immigrant children facing deportation. Click here to read a brief interview with Anthony.

On September 1, shelters for unaccompanied immigrant children in Texas were stripped of state licenses under an order issued by Governor Abbott. Young Center Deputy Program Director based in Harlingen, Texas Carrie Vander Hoek and Senior Litigation Attorney Jane Liu demonstrated the ways in which Governor Abbott's decision places children in harm's way in this op-ed for Newsweek.

In case you missed it, Young Center staff, volunteers, and supporters gathered earlier this month for a webinar featuring our partners the Angry Tias & Abuelas of the Rio Grande Valley and Aldea-The People's Justice Center. The webinar highlighted each organization’s work to support families seeking protection at the U.S.-Mexico border and those in immigration detention; Young Center staff also discussed lawsuits about the Biden administration’s border policies. Click here to watch the webinar or read a summary

To date, the campaign has raised $11,321 for the Young Center’s work with separated and unaccompanied immigrant children facing deportation. Young Center Philanthropy Director Birdie Soti reflected on the campaign and moment of solidarity in her blog.

“As a mother and an immigrant, I cannot be a bystander while children are separated from their families at the border.”
-Young Center-New York Volunteer Child Advocate Claudia Case
The Young Center works with the most vulnerable unaccompanied and separated immigrant children, so their voices are heard, and their best interests are protected. We also advocate for an immigration system that treats children as children. To learn more about our work, visit theyoungcenter.org or follow us on social media. Click here to donate.
