Top pick: Building forward together and ending persistent poverty

People across the world observed the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty with events and initiatives under this year’s theme Building forward together: Ending Persistent Poverty, Respecting all People and our Planet ([link removed]) . A virtual commemoration ([link removed]) , led by ATD Fourth World, brought together international organizations, civil society and governments galvanizing support to eradicate poverty.

On this occasion, the Global Coalition to End Child Poverty launched a new brief ([link removed]) analyzing Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs) from a child poverty perspective, looking at how countries mention and discuss their efforts to end child poverty, through measurement and policies. In their statement, Arigatou International ([link removed]) emphasized how this year’s theme highlights efforts by communities to build resilience in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, tackling the intergenerational persistence of extreme poverty, and responding to the global challenge of climate change as well as realising the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

High-level event on child poverty features innovative national solutions
by UNICEF
The Government of Lao PDR and UNICEF organized an event, with participation from Ireland, Montenegro, South Africa and the World Bank, to highlight the unprecedented increase in child poverty and inequality in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis, and outline the critical need to accelerate and reinforce global and national commitments for achieving the SDGs, ending extreme poverty and halving multidimensional child poverty. 644 million children live in multidimensional poverty
by Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative
This year’s Global Multidimensional Poverty Index 2021: Unmasking disparities by ethnicity, caste and gender ([link removed]) report, produced in partnership with Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) and the United Nations Development Programme Human Development Report Office (UNDP HDRO) unmasked inequalities. The report revealed that across 5.9 billion people from 109 countries, 1.3 billion are multidimensionally poor and about half of them are children under age 18. Leaders reflect on poverty reduction at the UN General Assembly

The Multidimensional Poverty Peer Network (MPPN) and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) co-hosted an online side event at the 76th UN General Assembly yesterday for 19 world leaders and policymakers. In the event, organised by the Oxford Poverty & Human Development Initiative (OPHI) at the University of Oxford, speakers discussed how to envision a more equitable future using Multidimensional Poverty Indices (MPIs) as policy tools. Virtual event brings inclusive and child-sensitive recovery to the fore

Led by a team at Institute of Development Studies (IDS) and University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI), the REJUVENATE project aims to re-energise child and youth rights in social justice processes through a growing networks of child rights actors and to further consolidate, evidence and develop the principles. Recent study uncovers the scale of child labour in Bangladesh’s leather industry

New research in Bangladesh reveals striking facts – children as young as seven years old are working in thousands of small businesses across Bangladesh’s leather sector, new research has found. Based on observations of over 150 children working 12-14 hour days, six days a week, it showed they are exposed to dangerous chemicals and at risk of injury.
