John,
From the day I was sworn in, my commitment has been to provide the Third District with strong, stable and effective representation. The Detroit Free Press described my approach as “independent when necessary, bipartisan when possible, and outspoken when called for.” Now is the time to be outspoken.
The deceptively-named ‘American Rescue Plan’ was in fact a $1.9 trillion enrichment of Democratic special interests wrapped in a cloak of pandemic response. However, rather than being the centerpiece of the Biden Administration’s plans, it was a quickly forgotten appetizer when the focus shifted to BIGGER, BOLDER, TRANSFORMATIONAL (read: revolutionary) proposals that progressives started to craft.
The result? Democrats racing to stuff as many unrelated policy priorities as possible into this $3.5 trillion behemoth now working its way through Congress. Money first, policy later. The effects this bill will have on inflation and our national debt will be significantly greater than the bill passed in January. I shudder to think what the next three years will do to our country if Democrats retain unified control.
I will be the first to look for common ground and a path forward when it is possible, but it is clear that President Biden and my Democratic colleagues in Congress are intent on maximizing partisan advantage while letting the state of affairs in this country continue to decline.
This is absolutely unacceptable. We MUST turn things around. This is why I came to Congress, but I need your help to continue pushing back against unilateral Democratic control. I have worked since the first day I arrived in Congress to restrain the executive branch, and to bring American policy making closer to the people through the arm of government closest to the people, The House of Representatives. The Biden Administration must be held to account for its serial failures to protect and advance American interests, and to improve the lives of its citizens.
