John, with just a week left until the general election, I’m asking if you’re voting “Yes” on ballot question number four — this question asks if you support a mandatory annual appropriation of $25 million from the general budget to Philadelphia’s Housing Trust Fund.

Here is why I’m calling on you to support the Housing Trust Fund referendum:

[ 1 ] Philadelphia is one of the only major cities in the country that does not prioritize affordable housing through an annual, mandated general fund budget appropriation. We are also a city with one of the highest poverty rates in the country.

[ 2 ] Half of all renters and nearly one out of every three homeowners do not have enough money left to cover other basic needs after paying their housing costs. If rent prices continue to skyrocket, more and more Philadelphians will continue to be displaced from their homes.

[ 3 ] A lack of affordable housing is an equity issue — 75% of Latinx residents and 55% of Black residents reported that they struggle to pay their bills and in North, West, and South Philadelphia.

John, this referendum to the Housing Trust Fund is an important first step to lift Philadelphians out of poverty, and I’m proud to have fought to get this question on the ballot.
