Wherever you live in the U.S., you’ve probably already seen the impact of climate change: The West Coast has been plagued with unbreathable air and orange skies caused by wildfires. The Southeast has been hit by intense hurricanes. And nearly half of the lower 48 states are currently experiencing a drought. There’s no way around it: Climate action can’t wait.
The U.S. has been dragging its feet for years, unable to address the climate crisis because fossil fuel special interests are spreading misinformation and paying off politicians with political donations. One lie that climate deniers keep spreading is that transitioning to renewable energy just costs too much money. The reality is, addressing climate change now is much cheaper than dealing with the consequences of inaction.
Not only does climate change pose an existential threat to humanity, it also poses the biggest long-term threat to the global economy. If we do not take action on climate change, it will cost exorbitant amounts of money to prepare for natural disasters, build back communities after extreme weather hits, and relocate climate refugees. That’s not even to mention the total disruption all of this could have on our systems of production. If we don’t take action to address the climate crisis, the U.S. could lose to 10% of its GDP in 30 years.
As climate devastation looms, it’s financially prudent to address the crisis now. But instead of investing in renewables, we’re still spending billions subsidizing the very industry that’s destroying a livable climate: The U.S. spends roughly $20.5 billion per year on direct subsidies to the fossil fuel industry.
But there’s hope: The Build Back Better Act could be the largest investment in climate action that our country has ever seen. The act could slash U.S. pollution by 45% in the next decade, speed up the transition to electric vehicles, and help us transition to renewable energy. The problem is, a couple conservative Democratic senators with ties to the fossil fuel industry are trying to take the strongest climate solutions out of the bill.
That’s why Civic Action is working to convince the Senate to pass the Build Back Better Act with the strongest possible climate solutions to invest in our economic stability and a livable climate. Climate action can’t wait, so we urgently need your help. Please, will you call on the Senate to pass the Build Back Better Act and finally act on climate change?

Thank you for helping us advocate for climate solutions. Together, we have the power to overcome fossil fuel lobbyists and finally convince Congress to take action on climate change.
