** Guatemala Declares State of Siege in El Estor, Radio Xyaab' Tzuultaq’a Raided
------------------------------------------------------------

On October 24, 2021, Guatemala's President Alejandro Giammattei declared a state of siege (martial law) in the town of El Estor, Izabal in response to clashes between Indigenous Q'eqchi land defenders and the State police. For 21 days prior, Q’eqchi community members had been protesting to demand that the Fénix Nickel Mine, currently owned by Swiss company Solway Group and operated by its Guatemalan subsidiary Compania Guatemalteco de Niquel, pause work until a consultation has taken place. Hydropower Projects on Likhu River Fail to Obtain Consent from Indigenous Communities in Nepal. Seven hydropower projects along the Likhu River in eastern Nepal have adversely impacted Indigenous and local communities who live in and near the project sites but have received little attention.

Each year Indigenous Peoples Day comes and goes, and so does the spotlight and national attention on Indigenous Peoples. While there is a growing movement to rename this federal holiday from Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day, more efforts beyond a name change are necessary to acknowledge the First Peoples of this land and to right the wrongs of a painful history of genocide and land theft.
