Bumblebee populations have declined nearly 90 percent in the last 20 years, thanks to habitat loss, disease, climate change, and pesticide use. Yet only two species of bumblebees are listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).
The U.S. Fish and WiIdlife Service is considering whether to add the American bumblebee to the endangered list, but we all know how slow this process can be. If we don’t act quickly, the American bumblebee may disappear forever.
Bumblebees are vital for pollinating crops like tomatoes and strawberries, as well as the wildflowers that birds and small mammals rely on for food. But due to numerous threats including the aggressive use of pesticides, bumblebees are in trouble. The American bumblebee has disappeared entirely from eight states, and populations have declined 50 to 99 percent in New York, the Midwest, and the Southeast.
Losing them would be devastating, so we're fighting for bold action to save our bumblebees and other pollinators. We are pushing the Environmental Protection Agency to save the bees by banning the use of dangerous pesticides, and we are supporting legislation like the Saving America’s Pollinators Act. Our reliance on dangerous pesticides like neonicotinoids is driving bumblebees and other bee species to the brink of extinction. These pesticides weaken bumblebees’ immune systems, harm their ability to find their way, and disrupt their ability to communicate.
