Dear John,

Every year, near the end of October, many Americans prepare-and
spend billions of dollars-on Halloween.

But looking past Halloween, I believe this season points to a deeper
issue Americans are confronting today: A culture permeated by fear.

Everywhere around us, opponents of freedom are known for using
intimidation, harassment and fear to censor people of faith, force
them into silence and deceive them into believing there's no
hope for their rights or freedoms.

This fear campaign is no secret. We see it in the radical Left
wielding "cancel culture" to bully and punish Americans
with religious beliefs who won't cater to the "woke"
political agenda. We see it in the way government officials have
levied attacks on houses of worship and religious organizations all
throughout the pandemic. We see it even in the halls of power with
pending legislation such as the so-called "Equality
Act"-a horrifying proposal that could end religious
freedom in our nation as we know it.

It's difficult to deny: Our nation is at a crossroads between
tyranny and freedom. And this means our calling in this crucial moment
as people of faith is to LIVE NOT BY FEAR, AND LIVE NOT BY LIES.

These frightening realities should not make us cower. Instead, they
are an opportunity for Americans to dispel the lies and the fear; to
confront them with boldness, courage and, most importantly, with
TRUTH.
