Hi Friend,

While Texans seeking office typically have almost a year between the
candidate filing deadline and Election Day to run a successful campaign,
special elections move on a condensed timeline. In the case of Texas House
District 28, candidates have only had three months to build teams, raise
money, and get their message out to voters.

Right now, [ Flip ]Flippable candidate Dr. Eliz Markowitz has just eight days
left in her race for a recently vacated seat in the GOP-held Texas State
House. There’s no overstating the significance of this special election.
Flipping House District 28 would put Democrats within eight seats of a
legislative majority in Texas’s lower chamber in 2020. That’s why there
are six GOP candidates in the running, too.

As the lone Democrat in this race, Dr. Eliz is competing against several
well-funded political operations. For every dollar she raises and every
door her campaign knocks, there are six other candidates seeking to
prevent her from flipping this seat. One of her GOP opponents, a Houston
anesthesiologist from the same doctor group as the retiring incumbent, has
received nearly $90,000 from affiliated medical associations. Another is a
self-funded Texas businessman who has spent more than $6.3 million on five
different electoral bids over the last 17 years. A third GOP candidate has
loaned $150,000 to her own campaign, making her the third-highest
fundraiser in this election.

Dr. Eliz simply cannot afford to fall behind in the last week. She and her
team are working tirelessly to knock 30,000 more doors before Election
Day. By flipping this seat, Dr. Eliz can build on Texas Democrats’
victories in 2018—when the GOP lost 12 seats in the state House—and bring
the Lone Star State one seat closer to a new majority. [ Flip ]Any amount you
give today will go directly to Dr. Eliz’s campaign, powering its
on-the-ground efforts to reach as many voters as possible before November
5th.
