John,
This summer, I visited the U.S.-Mexico border in Tijuana to listen and learn from the people there: migrants, refugees, and border patrol alike. The stories I heard were moving. Hundreds of people who don’t have a home or clear next step are peacefully and patiently sharing one small space—no privacy, no personal belongings. And as a mom, I was especially moved by the parents I saw there, who are seeking a better life for their families, but right now, can’t answer the questions their kids have: When will we be home? Are we safe here? Will I go to school? Many of these families live this way for years.
In the midst of these conditions, PILAglobal is doing incredible work to offer kids a chance to learn and play in a safe, peaceful, and engaging environment. They’re a Los Angeles based organization that operates education spaces for young asylum seekers living in refugee camps and migrant shelters. These spaces are called ‘Nests’ and today, PILA runs Nests not just in Tijuana, but also in Greece, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Zimbabwe.
The Nest I visited in Tijuana serves up to 100 children between the ages of three and ten each day, offering them a space for joy, learning and healing.
Before and after photos of PILAglobal’s Nest in Tijuana, Mexico. The vision they have to turn these rooms into world class spaces is incredible.
The reality is that our country has serious work to do to fix our immigration and asylum system. As migrants asked me ‘how do I apply for asylum,’ the answer was grim, and I saw how we are violating laws that require us to review migrants for a legitimate fear of persecution in their home countries. I’ll keep fighting for better oversight, and for real solutions to the problems within our immigration system.
I’m thankful for the people at PILAglobal who are doing this life-changing work. And thank you, John for supporting this excellent organization and the brave families they serve. Your donation will truly make a difference in the life of a child.
