A new trickle-down clown just pulled up to shore on his yacht: West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin refuses to support President Biden’s Build Back Better Act, which would expand the social safety net and lead to action on the climate crisis. Without his vote, this vital bill is doomed – and with it the best chance to recover the economy from the middle-out. But Americans aren’t just letting him off the hook.
In the middle of intense Senate negotiations, Manchin decided to sail off in his yacht “Almost Heaven.” But protesters intercepted his joy ride: A group of his constituents kayaked and rowed paddle boats to ask the senator important questions like, “What are you going to do for the poor in West Virginia?” Unsurprisingly, this clown had no good answer.
As Manchin speaks to constituents from high aboard his yacht, he repeats his lies about why we just can’t afford to pass the Build Back Better Act. You see, Manchin believes that we should put restrictions on President Biden’s Child Tax Credit, which has cut child poverty in half. He thinks we should let seniors on Medicare continue to go without hearing, dental and vision coverage. He doesn’t support raising the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour, even though the current minimum wage is so low that the average minimum wage earner has to work 79 hours a week to pay for a fair-rate one-bedroom apartment. And he believes that the bill shouldn’t include measures to tackle the biggest existential threat to humanity, the climate crisis.
All of this logic is totally backward – but Manchin’s motives become clear when you trace the money. Between 2011 and 2020, Manchin made $5.2 million from his coal company, which he’s now passed off to his son. Now, he’s supporting policies that make fossil-fuel millionaires like himself rich at the expense of the rest of us.
Joe Manchin may say he’s a moderate, but his economic views are extremely radical. It’s been proven that trickle-down economics causes drastic concentration of wealth and massive inequality. Because of trickle-downers like Manchin, $50 TRILLION has been redistributed from the bottom 90% of Americans since 1975, and it has gone straight to the top 1% of all Americans.
