Dear John
COP26 is just round the corner, but this Government is
undermining UK commitments for a greener future.
By voting to permit the continued
dumping of raw sewage into our rivers, by rejecting
plans to reduce air pollution limits and by failing to appoint an independent
environment watchdog, this
Government is using the green policies of COP26 as a smokescreen for
environmental damage.
In 2018, Michael Gove promised
Brexit would deliver higher environmental standards for Britain. But
it seems the architects of Brexit have reneged on this promise as well
as all the others.
We are, as the French would say,
truly dans la
merde.
This Government talks about
levelling-up, but without sustainable planning for a greener future,
we can never secure the kind of stability our society needs to bring
prosperity to all. Without sustainability embedded into all Government
decision-making, we will soon find ourselves hurt by an increasingly
volatile climate and by a society that is unable to respond
effectively to the challenges it faces.
Ultimately, it is
ordinary people like you and me who will bear the
burdens of this Government’s short-sightedness.
This Government’s feet are moving
in the opposite direction to where they say they are headed. Their
broken promises on the environment stand shoulder to shoulder with
their failure to level up Britain.
This is not acceptable - and we
must show the Government that we won’t stand for its empty words. Sign
our petition today.
Best wishes,
Maheen Behrana
