Selecting this week's winner!
Congratulations to Lynn Marie for correctly identifying the Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus). This striking owl can be found in the Piedmont region of Virginia hunting large fields for small mammals. According to our good friends at All About Birds ([link removed]) , this species has benefited from strip mining as it was able to increase its breeding range.
