It’s officially spooky season!
Ahead of Halloween, we’re diving into a few of the scariest aspects of politics (because our system isn’t perfect, John)—starting with corporate special interests.
For far too long, our political system has placed power into the hands of whoever can write the biggest check. The problem has only grown since the 2010 Supreme Court Citizens United decision, which allows corporations to spend an unlimited amount of money influencing elections.
And here’s what we know: 88% of the candidates who won their elections in 2020 also raised more money than their competitors. So as corporations funnel millions of dollars into our political process, corporate-funded candidates benefit.
Let us be clear, John: A system like that cannot represent the interests of working people across our country.
