Hi Friend, This may be the week. President Biden, Speaker Pelosi, and the rest of the Democratic leadership are working to get the bipartisan infrastructure bill to Biden’s desk before the end of this week. That’s the good news. The bad news: They’re also continuing the rush job on the one-party social spending bill, trying to force an agreement before Biden heads off to Europe on Thursday. That bill is arguably the most ambitious thing Washington has tried to do in 60 years, but it’s being jammed through without debate. Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) have been waging a lonely fight for common sense, urging a more deliberative process and a smaller price tag. They’ve both been slammed for it, by the media and by members of their own party. What’s funny is that they both embody exactly what Americans say they always want from their leaders. They’re independent thinkers and they’re standing on principle. Sinema wrote this summer: “I understand bipartisanship seems outdated to many pundits. … I still believe it is the best way to identify realistic solutions — instead of escalating all-or-nothing political battles that result in no action, or in whipsawing federal policy reversals.” Last month, Manchin argued, “Instead of rushing to spend trillions on new government programs and additional stimulus funding, Congress should hit a strategic pause on the budget-reconciliation legislation.” This is the kind of leadership Americans say they are desperate for, but the political and media establishment hates it. Sinema and Manchin are feeling the heat. We want to remind them that we’re behind them. We want to know what you think. Do you think that reconciliation is being rushed? Will the bipartisan infrastructure bill actually pass by the Halloween deadline? Take our survey with the link below. |
