John,

I represent over 790,000 people in Congress, but my toughest constituents
are my kids: Betsy, Luke, and Paul. Like many of my constituents, they’ve
been hearing a lot about the two bills that are a part of Biden’s Build
Back Better Agenda. Here’s a conversation I had the other day with my 13
year old son, Paul, who asked what the deal is with these bills. Here’s
what I said:

We have this big to-do list on infrastructure: fixing roads, bridges,
things like that. But people need a lot more than that to be successful.
So that’s why we have this second bill (called reconciliation), which will
address all of the other things families need: affordable child care,
elder care, health care, housing, paid leave, and action on climate. All
of these things, both improving infrastructure and really supporting
American families, are important.

Paul’s response was, “Well, I see a lot of roads, but no affordable child
care.”

And he’s totally right! Our country has literally never made investments
in things like child care—which has been bad for families and bad for our
economy.

At the end of the day, these bills shouldn’t be about a press conference
you can hold, they should be about people’s lives.

Onward,

Katie
