Dear Friend,
This Wednesday, MediaJustice is launching a brand NEW report, No More Shackles: Ten Arguments Against Pretrial Electronic Monitoring.
Interventions to reduce the harm of pretrial detention (or end it entirely) have made life-changing advancements in recent years. However, as organizers, advocates, community members, and policy makers innovate alternatives that divest from caging our people and invest in their thriving and wellness, electronic monitoring (EM) has been masquerading as a positive “alternative” to jail. MediaJustice centers the lived experiences of people directly impacted by the carceral system, and we know from those experiences that EM is no alternative to incarceration -- it is an alternative form of incarceration.
No More Shackles: Ten Arguments Against Pretrial Electronic Monitoring details these impacts and articulates why we must resist accepting EM as part of our efforts to decarcerate, or as a viable approach to significantly reducing, and ultimately ending, pretrial detention. A digital cage is still a cage, and we need to demand real alternatives, ensuring that there are truly #NoMoreShackles and #NoDigitalPrisons.
In partnership with the Chicago Community Bail Fund, we are hosting a report launch event on Wednesday night in an effort to better equip the movement to end mass incarceration. Not able to join us in in Chicago? Watch the livestream!
Plus, follow @mediajustice all week on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook as we spotlight the 10 arguments against pretrial electronic monitoring outlined in the report! And use #NoMoreShackles to add your own thoughts.
If you are new to the debate on EM, we hope that this new No More Shackles report will help you understand the need to resist this technology. If you are already fighting for the freedom of those being detained pretrial, we hope it provides you with information to use in your struggles.
Together, let’s demand real alternatives, not digital prisons.
In solidarity,
James, Myaisha, and the rest of #TeamMediaJustice
