Hey John,
Today, we have a scary story that only Run for Something could tell.
This is the story of the coroner in Macon County, Missouri:
There are over 1,500 corners in America, and their job is to record the manner of death for people in their jurisdiction. During a pandemic, their work is critical to understanding how widespread and deadly the pandemic really is.
But in Macon County, if families of deceased relatives request it, the current coroner takes COVID-19 off of their family member's death certificate.
That's really scary because it's led to over 1 in 3 coronavirus deaths being discounted. In a state where vaccine hesitancy is high, it means people aren't getting an accurate count of how deadly the virus really is so they can take steps to protect themselves and their community.
But here's the good news in this story: The coroner is an elected office. And it's exactly the kind of hyper-local race we specialize in.
This is why we do what we do. Run for Something is the only national organization dedicated to electing progressives to local offices like coroner, school board, and yes even dog catcher. Will you pitch in $5 or more to elect diverse young progressives to every office?

Due to officials like the Macon County coroner, we may never know the true amount of people that we've lost in this health crisis. But you know what? We're doing the work. We've worked with a number of coroner candidates over the years, including Sophia Garcia-Jackson, who's running for coroner in Chester County, PA. And, no, that's not Macon County, Missouri. But it is one person that won't be fudging the numbers just to make people happy.
Across the country, there are tens of thousands of hyper-local elections in
just 8 days. And every single one of them matters -- every single one impacts hundreds and thousands of lives.
So, John, help out by donating $5 or whatever you can. It's appreciated by our candidates and really does impact the future of America.
