Disaster for Profit

With the winter coming, we can expect to have severe weather. With severe weather, we will absolutely NEED disaster relief.   It was recently revealed that the Trump administration reallocated millions of dollars from FEMA, in order to fund ICE concentration camps.
The president* not only continues his cruel policies of detaining migrants, in clear violation of human rights, but he also endangers the lives of ALL OF US to do so, and he pays off his cronies at the same time.   While natural disasters are an act of nature, the federal government’s response come down to a political choice. Often this political choice can cost lives which could have been saved. This had real effects for the People of Puerto Rico. FEMA utterly failed the people of Puerto Rico in the aftermath of Hurricane MariaNot to mention the Whitefish Energy scandal, where a two-person company was awarded at $300 million contract to repair all of Puerto Rico’s power supplies, despite having absolutely no experience doing so. Whitefish was awarded the contract because the acting US Secretary of the Interior, appointed by trump, Ryan Zinke, was friends with Whitefish’s owner. The scandal resulted in Zinke’s resignation a few months after. Almost 3,000 people died from Hurricane Maria. trump said that he “did a fantastic job” in his response.
Both FEMA and ICE are controlled by the Department of Homeland Security.  In order to ramp up deportations, DHS requested $200 million of additional funding to cover the cost of detaining migrants.  Many of these detention centers are for-profit and rarely disclose information about location of the immigrants, how many are held there, and what the cost is.
FEMA provides response, recovery, mitigation and mission support during natural disasters such as hurricanes and earthquakes.  During disasters, potable water is often a scarce resource.  FEMA provides clean water to those in the disaster areas.  FEMA also provides emergency medical care, rescuing the elderly and vulnerable who may not be able to flee the disaster areas. In order words, having a robust and well funded FEMA literally saves lives.
Of course, many ICE detention centers are privately held, for-profit centers. Corecivic and GEO group, the two leading private-prison management companies, have seen their stocks skyrocket since the election of the president. Additionally, both of those companies, and high level executives in the company donated heavily to the Presidential election campaign.
And both of those companies operate ICE Detention centers in New Jersey. We need strong leaders willing to take action and close the ICE Camps. We don’t need empty statements and press releases. Frank Pallone, the incumbent, has issued press releases and statements about the problem. He has the power to shut down these detention centers by pressuring his allies that take funds from prison groups. We really need leaders willing to lead the charge against prison camps. We need leaders to call out the members of the Democratic party that allow detention centers to exist. I’ve been at rallies at Elizabeth detention center, protesting their very existence. We should close the camps. If I am elected I will be holding rallies against any other representative that lets prison camps be run in their district.
We also need leaders willing to hold fossil fuel executives accountable for deliberately lying to the public for decades, hiding the effects of pollution, and making the job of FEMA more difficult. We need more representatives demanding FEMA be funded fully so we have the resources needed to respond to the next crisis. I’ll immediately support holding fossil fuel executives accountable, and I support taxing fossil fuel companies because of their contribution to climate crisis and to fund FEMA. But the incumbent, Frank Pallone, cannot do that. He’s taken over a million dollars from the fossil fuel industry. They have purchased his inaction.
This President, and the unchecked current Congress, seems to put profit over people.  I’ll vote for People over Profit, always.
Sincerely,
