| | Support Tomorrow, Tuesday, October 26th, is Intersex Awareness Day For those who are new to the conversation, our friends at InterACT share the following, "Intersex is an umbrella term for differences in sex traits or reproductive anatomy. People are born with these differences or develop them at a young age. Genitalia, hormones, internal anatomy, or chromosomes can develop in many ways. The problem is, children’s bodies are often changed for them because of shame and stigma." Did you know that most surgeries happen before the age of two? Many of the world’s top human rights organizations agree: surgeries to change sex traits must be the individual’s choice. Want to learn more and provide support to intersex friends and loved ones? Visit interactadvocates.org to learn more, watch last week's episode of Something to Talk About Live, or check out this great TED Talk, "Intersex is Awesome," featuring our STTA Live guests Kristina and Ori Turner. Ready to get right to taking action? Check out "26 Ways Allies Can Support Intersex Awareness Day on 10/26." And to all of our intersex friends, families, and loved ones? We celebrate you today, tomorrow, and all year long! |
