Friends -
As the debate over the reconciliation bill winds down in Congress, one of the big questions is how bold we’ll be in our effort to combat climate change.
So before a deal is final and a vote is cast, now is the time to make our voices heard:
When you listen to people who oppose meaningful climate action, you’ll hear some form of “we can’t afford it.”
But the truth is, we can’t afford not to act.
Climate change is here. Today.
We see it in extreme weather disturbances and acidification of the oceans. We see it in longer droughts and larger forest fires. We see it in more diseases and climate migration. Our Wisconsin farmers feel it daily and children and pregnant women are disproportionately vulnerable to the impact of smoke-filled air.
It will only get worse if we fail to act.
Scientists tell us we only have a few years left if we have any hope of staving off irreversible damage to our planet.
Economists say we are talking about at least tens of trillions of dollars in lost economic activity worldwide if we fail to act on climate.
And in this reconciliation bill, what we are talking about is spending less than 1/2 of 1% of the annual budget per year to save the planet.
Seems like a much better investment than tax cuts for billionaires and huge corporations.
So Congress needs to hear from you on this issue. And that is why I am asking:
Thank you,
Mandela
