Friend,
The social media giant known as Twitter came clean last week with an
admission of a fact that many of us have known for a while.
In a self-congratulatory disclosure, the Silicon Valley titan confirmed
that its content algorithm has been disproportionately promoting
right-wing content over left-leaning content on its platform for some
time.
This disclosure arrives in direct contradiction to the loud and
relentless lies by assorted Republicans, far-right voices, and
MAGA-loving pundits that it was "liberals" and "progressives" getting
all the preferential treatment.
In other news, leaked "Facebook Papers" reveal a platform that
repeatedly "puts profit over people," and the internal docs show its
algorithms are actively promoting hateful content and misinformation
over high-quality news and critical insights.
Common Dreams has known for some time that corporate interests and their
right-wing influencers have always had a leg up in the for-profit world
of social media.
We've had a front-row seat to how corporate platforms have steadily
encroached on the ideals of a free and open internet, bending the
democratic promise of the web into a funnel of personal wealth for the
billionaires who increasingly control it.
But while this throttling of content hurts our ability to reach new
audiences and share our journalism, we refuse to let it stand in the way
of our mission: To inform. To inspire. To ignite change for the common
good.
Our promise is to keep holding power to account, and all we need to keep
going is support from readers like you, to ensure that no corporation,
no algorithm, and no amount of right-wing misinformation will keep us
from providing the coverage you have grown to expect from us.
Please join us today by helping us meet our crucial Fall Campaign goal.
Without your support, Common Dreams simply wouldn't exist.
