LULAC Joins Its Legal Advisor In Mourning
-----------------------------------------
Nation’s Oldest & Largest Civil Rights Organization Honors the Passing of Luis
Roberto Vera Sr.
Washington, DC - Domingo Garcia, National President and Sindy Benavides, National
Chief Executive Officer of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC)
today issued the following statement:
“When a warrior weeps, it is seldom for himself and today one of the strongest
leaders for civil rights in America grieves the passing of his father but
celebrates a life well-lived and its purpose fulfilled,” said Garcia. “Our dear
and respected friend and brother, Luis Vera Jr., Senior Legal Advisor to LULAC
for more than 30 years, has lost his Dad who died today in San Antonio, Texas at
his home surrounded by his family. Luis Roberto Vera Sr., age 92 was born October
11, 1927 in Weslaco, Texas and served in the U.S. Army and the Air Force
Reserves. He is survived by Basilia Vera, his wife of 71 years, six children,
grandchildren and great grandchildren. Our entire LULAC familia sends its love
and appreciation for the Vera family at this time of mourning and wishes to
express its deepest respect for its patriarch, a man whose values are reflected
in his son, a courageous defender on behalf of millions of Latinos across our
country. May you have peace knowing that the legacy of Mr. Vera Sr. lives on
through his children and because of this, he will not soon be forgotten,” said
Garcia.
“At a time when we our community is confronted by so much, Luis Vera Jr., is one
of the fiercest legal fighters in our nation for Latinos even as he had his own
personal battle helping care for a father suffering from Alzheimer for the past
10 years,” said Benavides. “Never once did he turn away from either struggle and
LULAC is grateful to the Vera Family for sharing a son, brother and husband. My
deep condolences to his mother, Sra. Basilia and may she be assured of our
infinite love for her son and family at this time of grief and sadness. While we
may not have had el honor of meeting Don Luis Roberto Vera Sr., we came to know
him through his son, who with integrity and steadfast valor has stood at the
highest centers of power and spoken eloquently and proudly for his people. Se ha
dado a respetar de parte del nombre Vera. For that, the land his father defended
and served is a better America today and a more just nation,” concluded Benavides.
