During the past year, our lives and communities have been disrupted in ways we had never seen before.

Yet, as the pandemic continues to test us, we are sure about one aspect of 2021: our commitment to combating climate change, protecting our environment, creating a more equitable future, and strengthening our democracy remains stronger than ever.

This year, despite all the challenges, our legislative champions followed through on their promises to put climate, environment, equity, and voting rights front and center, and our environment and democracy saw victory after victory in Augusta — thanks in large part to supporters like you.

Much of the work here at MCV is centered around political accountability — which culminates in our yearly Environmental Scorecard, which we use to showcase how each of your lawmakers measures up on their votes to protect Maine's environment, our health, and the climate.

This year’s scorecard examined 7 bills that addressed issues of climate action, pesticides, recycling, land protection, equity, and voting rights — and 79 state senators and representatives received our coveted 100% score.

Maine made real progress in 2021, but the truth is, we still have so much more to do. During a very difficult, mostly virtual legislative session, lawmakers stepped up to tackle the real and urgent challenges facing our state and nation and achieved some incredible victories, including:

A first-in-the-nation public fossil fuel divestment order;
Progress on a number of climate solutions;
Phasing out toxic chemicals;
Protecting pollinators;
Working to address systematic racism and advance equity;
Ensuring that every one of our democracy and voting rights priorities was signed into law;
Funding the wildly popular Land for Maine’s Future Program, which received sizable and much overdue funding in Maine’s State Budget—with bipartisan support.

These wins—and future victories—hinge on our collective ability to hold our lawmakers accountable for their votes on the important environmental, equity, and democracy issues our members care so deeply about.

The 2021 Environmental Scorecard also includes a Special Report on Governor Mills highlighting the Governor’s initiatives to address climate change, invest in Maine’s future, and protect voting rights.

Maine people need a strong clean energy economy, investments in clean transportation, efficient homes and businesses, flourishing natural resource industries, clean drinking water, resilient communities, and conserved lands and wildlife — and we need to ensure safe, accessible election systems and a fair and equitable transition to a new, green economy. We will continue to work with Gov. Mills and her team to ensure all Maine people, our economy, and our environment thrive.
