The situation in Syria is full of complexities and clouded with misleading talking points. Amidst the partisan rhetoric, it’s important to understand what factors need to be considered when making foreign policy decisions – and why pulling out of Syria was the wrong call.
The truth is that overall, the president’s foreign policy up until now has been well balanced between nation-building and pulling out troops entirely. But on this, I see the situation differently.
My thoughts:
This weekend, U.S. Special Operators lead a successful mission to take out ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Because al-Baghdadi is dead, America and the world alike are safer.
This mission underscores the importance of the U.S. maintaining a presence in the region. While the present ISIS leader is dead, we must keep pressure on the mid-level ISIS leadership that will seek to replace him. My full statement here.
