SEEC members Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.) and Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) have written to House Speaker Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Schumer urging the agricultural provisions remain in the final bill.
John,
SEEC members are fighting tooth-and-nail to preserve the climate-agriculture provisions in the reconciliation bill.
As the House and Senate get closer to a reconciliation package agreement, SEEC members Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.) and Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) have written to House Speaker Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Schumer urging the agricultural provisions remain in the final bill.
“If the United States is going to meet its climate goals, it is essential that we actively enlist the help of those who know the land best — farmers, producers, ranchers, and forestland owners — to not just cut greenhouse gas emissions but actively sequester carbon from our atmosphere,” they wrote.
Democrats are pushing for $28 billion in conservation funding, including $5 billion in direct payments to farmers that start using cover crops. Additionally, the House Agriculture Committee secured millions for climate research in the committee process.
SEEC members are concerned funding for these important climate-agriculture provisions will be eliminated from the final reconciliation package because of demands from Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema that the overall cost is trimmed.
Thanks to your help in 2020, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 117th Congress while we undo the damage of the Trump Administration.
