Time and time again this year, the GOP has used the filibuster to block critical pieces of legislation from becoming law. First, it was the For the People Act, now it’s the Freedom to Vote Act — both historic pieces of legislation that would protect our democracy.

Contrary to popular belief, the filibuster was NOT a part of the Founding Fathers’ vision for government procedure. Instead, it was created almost entirely by accident. But since its creation, it has been used repeatedly to block progressive legislation that protects many of Americans’ most important rights.
