Hey John,

I’m Eve, Federal Affairs Manager for March For Our Lives and a sophomore in college. Every month, I’ll be highlighting a piece of life-saving legislation that needs your support. This month, it’s the Assault Weapons Ban of 2019 (H.R. 1296). Believe it or not, a bill banning weapons of war from civilian use does not have enough support to pass the House right now.

The Assault Weapons Ban would do exactly what it says -- it would ban the sale or possession of semiautomatic assault weapons and large capacity ammunition feeding devices. These are exactly what’s used in almost every mass shooting -- including in Parkland, Dayton, and Sandy Hook. They’re designed to kill as many people as quickly as possible.

There used to be a federal assault weapons ban from 1994-2004, and the gun lobby spent an extraordinary amount of time and money trying to make people think that this ban didn’t work. In reality, since that ban was lifted, the number of people who have died by guns has increased by 400%.

Passing an assault weapons ban would save lives. It really is that simple. These weapons and devices were created for military use, not to be kept in the homes of everyday Americans. We should not continue living in terror of coming face to face with a weapon of war in our homes, schools, houses of worship, or streets.

It’s time we make it loud and clear: Capitol Hill might be hesitant about pissing off the NRA with this bill, but we aren’t. If we get enough public support for this bill, we might see some movement on it. Let’s get loud.

Thanks,
Eve Levenson
