Whitmer Gilchrist for Michigan

John,

In Michigan and across the country, 2020 brought an unprecedented number of challenges. But as always, I was inspired by the level of grit and dedication that I saw from Michiganders in every part of our state -- and one of the many ways we saw that spirit on display was in the commitment to ensure that every single person had access to the ballot box.

More than 1,600 local Republican, Democratic and non-partisan election clerks across our state administered the most secure, accessible and high turnout election in our state’s history despite the challenges the pandemic presented. That is because we already have secure elections and effective voter ID laws that work in Michigan.

But after people voted in record numbers, extremist actors have spread lies and conspiracy theories and laid the groundwork to limit access to the ballot box. There have been hundreds of bills in state legislatures that would make it harder to vote, including dozens in Michigan that would make our voting laws the strictest in the nation or undermine trust in our elections.

But there’s a way to improve our democracy at the federal level.

The federal government needs to take action to improve access to voting and protect the right to vote in Michigan and across the country with practices like early voting, vote-by-mail and same-day voter registration. It would also protect the integrity of our elections by guarding against interference and putting security requirements in place.

There is no time to wait. Join me in signing your name to tell the Senate to act now and protect the right to vote >>

This is not a Democratic or Republican issue -- this impacts each and every one of us. We have to work together to rebuild that trust in order to protect our democracy.

Thank you,

Gretchen Whitmer
