Planned Parenthood Shakeup Reveals Its Core Mission Is Still Abortion
A shakeup in Planned Parenthood leadership yet again shows that the primary mission of the nation’s largest abortion business isn’t to provide “women’s health services”—it’s to sell abortions.
Planned Parenthood is looking for another president after Leana Wen’s forced departure earlier this week. She had stepped into her new role just eight months ago.
Although an ardent defender of abortion “rights” herself, Wen had tried to broaden Planned Parenthood’s program to focus more heavily on other women’s health issues in addition to selling abortions.
But her efforts to expend more of Planned Parenthood’s resources on services unrelated to its bread and butter didn’t sit well with the board. According to Wen, the Planned Parenthood board wanted her to “double down on abortion rights advocacy.” When she kept focusing on non-abortion services, the board arranged for her exit.
For years, Planned Parenthood and its supporters have pedaled the falsehood that abortion only accounts for a small portion of the services it provides.
In truth, abortion accounts for as much as 55 percent of Planned Parenthood’s clinic revenue, totaling an estimated $164 million per year, according to a 2011 estimate. That number has undoubtedly increased in recent years as Planned Parenthood has “doubled down” on abortions and significantly reduced its non-abortion services.
For all the talk of Planned Parenthood offering cancer screenings to women with nowhere else to turn, consider this surprise: Planned Parenthood doesn’t even perform mammograms in its clinics. Women going to a Planned Parenthood clinic seeking a mammogram are referred to legitimate, non-Planned Parenthood medical providers by Planned Parenthood staff.
And consider adoption. For every one adoption referral it provides, Planned Parenthood performs 118 abortions.
Planned Parenthood is in the abortion business, and Leana Wen’s forced departure couldn’t make it any clearer. Comprehensive women’s health services are just a convenient guise used by abortionists to hoodwink legislators into giving them more government funds and to create a pipeline of patients for abortion, their most profitable product.
Maybe the turbulence at Planned Parenthood is because they see the writing on the wall. Over 54 percent of Americans believe the U.S. Supreme Court should “overturn” or “modify” Roe v. Wade, and pro-life progress is being made in the courts and especially in state legislatures.
Family Policy Alliance® has been a key player in these pro-life victories, championing the Georgia Heartbeat Law and successfully combating a radical abortion bill in New Mexico.
The tide is turning in favor of life. As the eyes of millions are opened to the tragedies perpetrated by the abortion industry, more and more Americans are standing up and getting involved in this generational struggle for a nation where life is cherished. Planned Parenthood is right to take notice.
