Friend,
Polls show that huge majorities support the key provisions in President Biden’s Build Back Better reconciliation bill, like universal pre-K, paid family leave, expanding Medicaid, and clean energy. It’s all paid for with tax increases on the ultra wealthy, which are also hugely popular.
So how are just two Democratic senators—Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema—getting away with blocking it?
With a huge assist from the corporate media.
Most Americans simply don’t know what’s in the reconciliation bill, because the corporate media rarely mentions anything except the overall price tag: $3.5 trillion. Worse yet, they provide no context for that number, failing to mention that it’s spread out over a decade or that it’s a fraction of the military’s budget within the same time frame.
Common Dreams is doing the reporting that the corporate media won’t, informing readers of all the vitally important investments in the reconciliation bill, lifting up the voices of the working people who need it, and calling out the false claims of Republicans, corporate Democrats, and their billionaire backers who simply don’t want to pay their fair share of taxes.
Manchin and Sinema are on the verge of killing—or fatally weakening—the Build Back Better bill. Will you donate to our critical Fall Campaign and help us support our urgently needed reporting on the reconciliation bill?
