Friend,
Tim Berners-Lee, the founder of the World Wide Web, once described the
internet as a "permissionless space for creativity, innovation and free
expression."
It was in this fertile soil of the free and open internet that Common
Dreams was founded and grew to become the incredible people-powered,
reader-funded news outlet that informs and inspires millions.
But the free and open internet that allowed Common Dreams to thrive is
disappearing.
Tech giants like Google and Facebook have become the new gatekeepers,
controlling which voices are heard and who gets pushed off to the side.
These tech giants control a huge percentage of traffic on the internet
with algorithms designed with just one priority in mind: making money
for themselves.
On an internet controlled by big corporations, nonprofit outlets like
Common Dreams don't have a chance, and every year it gets harder to
attract the readers and donations we need to pay our newsroom staff and
keep our servers running. And I'll be honest. Based on current trends,
we may not be around much longer.
Friend , as a Common Dreams reader, you know how
valuable our journalism is. We do the reporting that the corporate media
won't on issues like the climate emergency, corporate power, racism, and
the military-industrial complex.
Please make a donation and help us meet our must-hit Fall Campaign goal.
Without your support, we simply won't be able to go on.
