Late last week, dozens of Haitian families living in Massachusetts filed a
civil rights complaint against the Biden Administration for the inhumane
conditions they faced while seeking asylum at the southern border.
On the heels of massive unrest following the assassination of Haitian
President Jovenel Moïse and the devastation of a 7.2 magnitude earthquake,
families fleeing a humanitarian crisis to seek asylum should be met with
compassion and support — not hostility, cruelty, and inhumane conditions.
Haitian lives are Black lives, and if we believe Black Lives Matter, there
must be accountability for the cruel treatment of Haitian asylum seekers.
That’s why Ayanna issued a statement on the civil rights complaint,
demanding a full investigation and accountability on the part of the Biden
Administration.

cruel and inhumane treatment of Haitian refugees at the border and in

The civil complaint alleges that the federal government discriminated
against Haitian refugees based on their race and national origin.
Complaints range from the denial of medical attention and care to
insufficient food and water provided, as well as dangerous conditions that
led one pregnant woman to miscarry.^1
Ayanna is demanding an investigation into how anti-Haitian and anti-Black
sentiments affected Department of Homeland Security (DHS) practices and
procedures at the border.

cannot turn a blind eye to the treatment of Haitians seeking refuge at our
door. Add your name if you support a full investigation into the treatment
of Haitian immigrants by DHS and join Ayanna in demanding accountability.
Thank you,
