Border Angels alongside the amazing individuals of the El Chaparral Humanitarian Alliance (AFSC, APALA-SD, BCC, UUSDV, PSFBC), were able to order and distribute boxes on boxes of needed items in the encampment such as underwear, socks, tents and so much more. During the entirety of the pandemic, it has been increasingly difficult to receive, transport, and distribute physical donations in Tijuana due to border restrictions and our preventative measures not accepting volunteers.

However, the need for donations continues, as people continue to arrive at the El Chaparral encampment, and asylum-seeking remains primarily unavailable. Still, we continue to get creative and find ways to assist migrant families, and with the help of our supported shelter, Borderline Crisis Center were able to ship and receive a huge amount of donations.

We are grateful to help provide some moments of comfort and normalcy for our migrant families in the midst of so much uncertainty.

Saturday we had two groups resupply three canyons, two of which were on the opposite side of the mountain range. The areas we cover are vast, and numerous canyons are used for migrant travel.

Things we saw/learned on Saturday's Water Drop:
* We found a lot of our drop sites in these canyons were at 100% consumption, or just short of 100%. Personal belongings possessed by those crossing through were changed out for new items that we left, such as socks and hats. A hat left behind was from Hard Rock Cafe in Mexico.
* We found boots that were sold at a shop in Honduras, were worn/brought to the United States as someone's possession, and left behind in the desert.
* We saw evidence that the water filters that were discounted/donated by Sawyer Products were used at the freshwater spring and used further down the massive canyon.

These things we learned help us gather information and tell a little of a story that would otherwise be unknown.

Meet Gustavo!
We have helped another person out of for-profit immigration prison! This brings our grand total to 97 bonds posted! Gustavo is a 24-year-old asylum seeker from Colombia who spent 3 months inside the Imperial Regional Detention Center.

This year, we want to free 100 people from immigration detention, and we need YOUR help.

National Day of Action: 10/14

On National Day of Action, we joined Haitian Bridge Alliance for a rally and candlelight vigil to demand an end to mass deportations of Haitians and an end to anti-Black violence on all Black immigrants.

The Biden Administration has failed Black immigrants that came to our doorstep to seek safety: in under a week, thousands of Haitian migrants seeking safety from violence, political unrest, and the devastating impact of an earthquake, have been forcibly expelled back to Haiti, detained in decrepit ICE facilities, or abandoned entirely with zero access to basic necessities.

We have effectively denied Black immigrants the legal right to seek asylum in the U.S., abused and harmed children and families at the encampment in Del Rio, and deported over 4,000 back to a country that does not have the infrastructure to receive them under Title 42 — a racist, Trump-era policy that Biden has extended to turn people seeking safety in the U.S. away under the guise of public health.

We need Biden to stop expulsions, end Title 42, and welcome people with dignity and compassion.

This Monday, we were invited to Attorney General Bonta’s San Diego Hate Crimes Roundtable along with other community leaders, select local elected officials, law enforcement officers, and local faith leaders for a discussion on combatting hate crimes, addressing issues of regional and statewide concern, and identifying best practices to help keep our communities safe.

While we have made strides to do so, we still see injustice, crimes, and hateful rhetoric to do this day. From hate mail to harassment of day laborers, and phrases we keep hearing we’ve been fighting against since our inception like “send them back” and “illegal aliens.”

We are so grateful to all agencies and organizations that are willing to continue this dialogue and take active steps toward countering hate speech and hate crime. We continue to build on our mission of active love, and we will continue to fight to make our communities safe and welcoming.

Title 42, a clause of the 1944 Public Health Services Law, allows the government to prevent the entry of migrants during a public health emergency without giving them an opportunity to claim asylum, a right afforded by U.S. law. Former President Donald Trump enacted the policy in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Migrant Protection Protocols, also known as “Remain in Mexico,” is a controversial policy enacted by Trump in late 2018 that forces asylum seekers to wait in Mexico while their claims are processed.

Dulce García, executive director of Border Angels, draws a strong correlation between the implementation of Title 42 and the places in the desert where her organization renders aid. They place thousands of gallons of water along paths heavily traveled by migrants and since Title 42 went into effect, they’ve placed the containers in more remote areas. “We drop the water and we see that in some routes there’s 100% consumption and that’s an indicator that people are still crossing. We see kids’ backpacks, kids’ shoes, women’s underwear. … It’s family units that are going through there,” said García.
