Statement From No Labels Co-Executive Director Margaret White

For years, Joe Biden defended the filibuster, but now he’s saying it needs to be changed. This is awful news. It would radically change how the Senate works, and undermine all we are trying to do to advance two-party solutions. Instead, Biden should reach out to Republicans to deal with the nation’s challenges.

Senator Joe Biden then: “The Senate ought not act rashly by changing its rules to satisfy a strong-willed majority acting in the heat of the moment.”

President Joe Biden now: “We’re going to have to move to the point where we fundamentally alter the filibuster.”

On Thursday night in Baltimore, the President undermined his own long-stated commitment to bipartisanship by abandoning his commitment to defending the filibuster. Instead of changing the rules, the President should demand an immediate vote on the infrastructure and jobs bill that passed the Senate with the votes of both parties, and reach out to Republicans to test their willingness to find a two-party solution to deal with voting rights and our other challenges.
