Last week, Food & Water Action joined the People vs. Fossil Fuels mobilization: one of the largest civil disobedience actions in decades! Thousands of people took action to demand that President Biden stop all new fossil fuel projects and declare a climate emergency.
But there is more work to be done. We must hold President Biden and our elected officials accountable to reining in polluting industries and tackling the climate crisis.
Every year, the federal government gives $15 billion in direct subsidies to the fracking and fossil fuel industries. That’s right: billions of our tax dollars are going to prop up a dying industry that is poisoning our water and fueling the global climate crisis. That's madness.
The End Polluter Welfare Act would close dozens of federal tax loopholes that specifically benefit oil, gas and coal special interests. It would also prohibit any taxpayer funding for fossil fuel research and development, and it would end federal support for international oil, gas and coal projects. This is a critical piece of legislation, and your members of Congress need to hear from you in order to support it.
Now is the time to make your voice heard. Congress is debating this issue right now, and could include the End Polluter Welfare Act as part of the larger infrastructure package. But President Biden and congressional leadership are under enormous pressure from Big Oil and its friends to keep these subsidies in place. We need to pressure every single member of Congress to finally end fossil fuel subsidies!
Food & Water Action is working with a large coalition on this campaign, and repealing fossil fuel subsidies is a critical part of our strategy to ban fracking everywhere. But in order to win this fight, we need you to join us and speak out.
