Friend, this is an urgent request.

The Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission (MICRC) is in the middle of public hearings across the state asking for feedback on their first set of maps. And I have to be honest with you, these draft maps don’t properly represent the people of the proposed districts. In fact, they are in direct violation of the Voting Rights Act and they diminish the power of Black and Brown voters throughout the Detroit region.

We are asking you to rush $10 or more to help us continue to send the message to the MICRC that every voter in Michigan, regardless of where they live, deserves to be represented by people that look and live like them.

On Wednesday, hundreds of people spent hours giving public comments during the hearing in Detroit. I watched person after person line up at the TCF Center and speak with one voice. We will not sit quietly as you diminish the importance of Black votes, intentional or not. The MICRC needs to address these concerns and make adjustments to their maps in response.

The voters of Detroit and Black people everywhere will know if they are being ignored, when they see the new lines. I want to believe the people of Detroit and southeast Michigan were heard; I want to believe the MICRC will do the right thing.
