A recent study on bullying from CBC has brought to light some of the horrific realities about bullying in schools across Canada. For students who identify as LGBTQI2S, those realities are often far worse.

Egale's national research report, Every Class in Every School, found that 70% of students hear homophobic, biphobic and/or transphobic remarks every day. Verbal harassment that is left unaddressed and notions of discrimination left unlearned, translate directly into acts of violence. One in five LGBTQI2S students reported being assaulted or harassed due to their perceived gender and/or sexual identity. This type of violent bullying can have far reaching impacts, as 2/3 of LGBTQI2S students feel unsafe in school and nearly 60% of straight students reported feeling upset by homophobic comments.  It's necessary that we do more to combat and prevent violent bullying in Canadian schools so that all students can feel safer.

Egale offers a range of services, materials and supports for educators and students to help prevent and combat bullying in Canadian secondary schools:

  • Safer and Accepting Schools Workshops that focus on anti-discrimination, building allyship and safer spaces for all educators and schools staff.
  • School Policy Review to tackle acts of verbal and physical harassment. Contact [email protected] and have our team review your board's policies and provide recommendations.
  • Sign up for our free webinar ‘Tackling Anti-LGBTQI2S Cyberbullying’ for students and educators. Throughout the webinar we provide resources and tools to help prevent and deal with online bullying.

Together we can create safer school environments for all students.

Sincerely,

Helen Kennedy
Executive Director, Egale Canada

Intersex Awareness Day | October 26

This Intersex Awareness Day we launched a new bilingual resource Supporting Your Intersex Child, for parents/guardians of intersex children. Supporting Your Intersex Child includes general guidelines for navigating the healthcare system and navigating conversations with your child, your family, and with schools. Since being intersex is often confused with gender identity, we have included a handy guide to help parents understand this distinction themselves, and more easily explain it to others. A curated resource list is included at the end for further information.
