Good evening friend,
All your hard work has paid off! After an eight hour debate in the House of Lords today, Baroness Meacher’s Assisted Dying Bill passed its Second Reading unopposed. This is a huge win for the campaign and a testament to your incredible work and generosity in the run-up to today. Thank you.
But it’s not over yet. The Bill will now go to committee stage where it will be further scrutinised - it is at this stage we expect crucial votes to take place. Now is the perfect opportunity to attract the ear of Government. Will you sign this open letter to Boris Johnson today?
This letter asks the Prime Minister to recognise that assisted dying is a change that is coming and requests that he allocates parliamentary time to allow full and fair debate. Only then will Parliament be able to fully scrutinise the evidence sufficiently to make a more compassionate law reality.
The last time a Bill was in the House of Lords, we were on track to win but simply ran out of time for the Bill to make it through Parliament. If the Prime Minister made this commitment it would signal a significant shift and recognition by the Government of the importance of assisted dying.
It takes just 10 seconds to sign your name - will you sign our open letter now?
At the demonstration today, one impassioned supporter told me that it takes brave people to change a law. It does. From you and our thousands of amazing supporters, to those who share their personal stories in the press, to the many new Peers who spoke out in support today.
More Peers than ever before were moved to speak on this issue. Many political heavyweights threw their influence behind our cause including many who changed their minds to voice their support for the very first time.
This epitomises what this campaign is fighting for. Thank you for being with us. Thank you for speaking up for dying people. Thank you for taking this huge step closer to law change.
Keep up the great work,
P.S. It takes just 10 seconds to add your name to this open letter. Every voice makes our case for change stronger - please, sign today.
