CHART OF THE MONTH
Educational Attainment of Teen Mothers
at Time of Birth, 2019
In honor of Halloween, we'd like to slay some zombies. In this case, the
zombie is an old data point that keeps rising from the grave.
With a quick google, the internet will tell you that less than half of teen
moms earn a high school diploma. Statistics like these seem to reinforce
the theme that teen parents are doomed to failure before they even start.
But is this true?
The "less than 50% high school graduation rate" is based off of legitimate
research from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth -- but it's looking
at a cohort of young people who were teens in 1996 (the ones wearing
scrunchies and slip dresses the first time around). Is it possible things
have changed in the last 25 years? Birth certificate data suggests so.
Looking at Texas teens who gave birth in 2019, 52% already had a high
school diploma at the time of birth. In fact, 10% had already enrolled in
college and 1% had completed their associates degree. Even if not a single
one of these young parents set foot in a classroom after giving birth, the
"less than 50%" statistic would already be untrue.
Early parenthood can make it harder to achieve educational goals, but many
school districts work hard to provide intensive support to teen parents to
give them their best chance at success.
Texas Youth-Friendly Initiative
Cohort 4 of the Texas Youth-Friendly Initiative launched on Oct. 1 and
includes the following clinics:
* Ball Teen Health Center (Galveston, TX)
* Dell Children's Adolescent Medicine Clinic (Austin, TX)
* Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas, Tyler Health Center (Tyler, TX)
* TRS Health (Houston, TX)
* UT Physicians Multispecialty - The Heights (Houston, TX
The clinics are in the pre-implementation (data collection) phase of the
Adolescent Champion Model (ACM) [8], collecting youth surveys from their
adolescent patients, as well as staff/clinician surveys from all staff and
clinicians in the clinics.
In addition to collecting data from the surveys, the clinics are completing
the clinic information tool in preparation for their individual baseline
assessment, or ACE-AP, meetings. ACE-AP stands for Adolescent-Centered
Environment Assessment Process, and the champion team members will use it
to set priorities for the 12-month implementation period.
COLLABORATIVE FOR YOUTH IN CARE
We are looking for new members to join the Collaborative for Youth in Care
(CLYC), which is currently made up of eight organizations with expertise in
teen pregnancy prevention and child welfare. We especially would like to
invite youth in care or formerly in care, caregivers of youth in care,
legal and healthcare providers with experience serving youth in care. If
you are interested, or know someone who would be a good fit, click here
[9].
TEXAS FOSTER YOUTH HEALTH INITIATIVE
Earlier this month, we held our first Houston training for Brave
Conversations and had stakeholders from across different sectors of the
welfare system join and engage in meaningful conversations. Scheduling for
Brave Conversations is ongoing, if you are interested in participating
please click here [10] and fill out an interest form. We will coordinate
with you the best way of facilitating the four hour training for you and
your staff.
UNHUSHED Training
On Monday, October 25 there is a free four-hour UNHUSHED training, from 9am
to 1pm CDT for professionals working with youth in care to learn more about
how to navigate tough questions about healthy relationships and sexual
health. Participants will earn four CEUs and receive a free digital and
hard copy of “An Introduction to Sexuality Education: A Handbook for
Child Welfare Providers.”
