Dear Friend of the National Parks,
This Halloween season, we want to share conservation stories of ghost orchids and our country's rarest bats with you. Join us on October 27 for a talk featuring experts from National Parks Conservation Association and Bat Conservation International (BCI) that will include family-friendly and individual activities that you can do during Bat Week and an interactive Q&A session at the end.
Ghost orchids are elegant, elusive plants that are only found in one place in the U.S. -- deep in the swamps of the western Greater Everglades. A globally imperiled species, ghost orchids help highlight the many threats that affect the delicate balance of the swamp ecosystem -- from drought and hurricanes to habitat degradation and even illegal poaching. Hear about exploration deep into the heart of ghost orchid habitat, unique insights into what science tells us about this fascinating species, and how we can help advocate for better protection of rare species and their habitats through the Endangered Species Act.
Bats are integral to ecosystems across the country by consuming insects, pollinating plants and dispersing seeds. Florida bonneted bats are considered our country's rarest bat species, and are only found in Southern Florida. BCI's Dr. Melquisedec Gamba-Rios will share his story of researching and conserving Florida bonneted bats, and will unveil the latest exciting news about bat conservation and recovery. Best yet, there are fun ways you can get involved! BCI's Erin Cord will highlight ways that individuals and families can engage in bat-centric activities, from your own backyards to parks across the country.
