Show Your Support for Families Impacted by Domestic Violence

Did you know that October is Domestic Violence Awareness month? NVFS' Multicultural Center provides trauma-informed, culturally appropriate support for victims of trauma and domestic abuse in Northern Virginia. To learn more about this program's impact, read Diana's story to see how NVFS helped her find the strength and resiliency she needed to care for herself and her children.

Register for the Annual CARE Awards

Registration is now open for the CARE Awards in 2021! Please join us for this virtual event where we will recognize 19 exemplary companies proactively making our region one of the best places to live, work, and play.

In addition to recognizing the 2021 CARE winners, the event will feature keynote speaker Dr. C. Nicole Mason, President & CEO of the Institute for Women's Policy Research, who coined the term she-cession at the start of the pandemic to describe the disproportionate impact of the employment and income losses on women.

We hope to see you there!

Escala Featured in The Washington Post

On October 18, The Washington Post featured NVFS' Escala program, which provides customized training and support to aspiring small business owners. The article highlights how, even during the height of the COVID crisis, Escala helped immigrant food entrepreneurs achieve their small businesses dreams. Thanks to this program, offered in partnership with La Cocina VA, Roberto Tapia, owner of Roda Juice, found he had the confidence needed to achieve his goals.

Holiday Calls for Action: Operation Turkey and Gifting for Families

Every year, thousands of families experiencing poverty depend on NVFS to help make the holidays special for their children. Operation Turkey and Gifting for Families are two of NVFS' most well-known initiatives in the community, and both are driven by volunteers and contributors like you!

Operation Turkey: For more than 25 years, NVFS has been providing Thanksgiving and holiday food packages for thousands of families in Greater Prince William with Operation Turkey. Thanks to generous support from the community, nearly 50,000 pounds of food are donated each year from schools, businesses, civic and faith groups and individuals. For more information on how to donate food, check out our Operation Turkey flier. If interested, please sign up today to volunteer. Slots are limited.

Gifting for Families: Holidays are particularly difficult for families experiencing poverty. Parents take joy in giving their children gifts at the holidays, but unfortunately often have to make a choice between gifts and groceries or other household necessities. Gifting for Families ensures these parents will be able to give their children gifts without further stretching their budgets. Can you donate a toy this year for a child experiencing poverty? If so, please check out our toy list. Keep an eye out for the volunteer sign-up link in next month's Insider.

If you are short on time but still want to support these efforts, please consider making a contribution today!

Make a Difference by Volunteering!

NVFS depends on the individuals and organizations that volunteer and/or provide in-kind donations in support of our programs. Whether you volunteer to greet people at the thrift shop, unload boxes of donated food at our Hunger Resource Center, or prepare meals at our homeless shelter, your efforts will make a difference for the families we help thrive.
