Dear John,
First, Joe Manchin came out as the ONLY Democratic senator to oppose the For the People Act, a historic bill that would protect our voting rights from the onslaught of attacks by Republican state legislators.
Then, he said he would negotiate a watered-down bill in an effort to get Republicans on board.
Well… yesterday, after the House voted to pass Manchin’s bill, it was brought to the Senate floor, where every single Republican voted in lockstep to use the filibuster to kill the bill.
And STILL, Joe Manchin remains opposed to getting rid of the filibuster. Enough.
Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats may be coddling Manchin, but here at Inequality Media Civic Action, we aren’t afraid of any politician -- no matter their political party.
We can’t let one senator -- who represents less than one half of one percent of all Americans -- hold our democracy hostage.
The fact is that the GOP is hell-bent on denying voters of color, low-income voters, and young voters access to the ballot. So we must remain laser-focused on saving our fragile democracy by passing bold federal voting rights legislation.
But Joe Manchin is standing in the way, claiming that eliminating the filibuster is a bridge too far.
Well, we have a message for Joe Manchin: You know what’s more radical than abolishing the filibuster? Watching 19 states pass voter suppression laws and doing absolutely nothing to stop it.
But with so much on the legislative agenda -- from raising the debt ceiling to passing the Build Back Better agenda -- we don’t have much time to act to pass voting rights legislation. And right now, when Joe Manchin has just seen his own watered-down bill fail, it’s our best chance to do exactly that.
Thank you for your support,
